How fake Instagram stores work
The page looks like a small brand: product photos, a few reels, prices well below the market. When you message, you are moved to WhatsApp and sent a QR code for full payment in advance. After that the parcel never comes, a cheap item arrives instead, or you are blocked.
In March 2026 police in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh arrested two young men accused of running pages like this. Police linked them to 27 complaints from Assam, Bengal, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, and to 13 bank accounts: when their own accounts were frozen, they switched to other people's.
Small businesses are targets too. A mobile shop owner in Adilabad, Telangana found an Instagram seller of spare parts and paid ₹2,18,000 by QR code over two weeks in 2026. He was sent a courier receipt on WhatsApp, the delivery kept slipping, and the courier office could not be found.
What the conversation usually looks like
How to check an Instagram page before you pay
- Open the page's profile menu and tap About this account. Instagram shows the date the account joined and how many times its username has changed. A shop that is weeks old, or has been renamed many times, needs more checking.
- Look past the follower count. Read the comments on older posts and look for buyers who posted the product they received, then message one or two of them.
- Search the page name and its phone number together with words like “fraud” or “review”.
- Ask for cash on delivery, or pay through a marketplace or payment method that offers buyer protection. A seller who refuses every option except an advance UPI payment is asking you to carry all the risk.
- Check whose name the UPI ID shows before you pay. A shop that sends you to a different person's account each time is a warning sign.
Red flags
- Prices far below other shops
- Advance payment only, no cash on delivery
- New account or many past usernames
- Comments turned off or only emojis
- Pushes you to pay quickly on WhatsApp
Signs of a real seller
- An account that has existed for a long time
- Buyers you can actually reach
- A business name that matches the payee
- Offers cash on delivery or a checkout with protection
- Answers questions without hurrying you
Where to complain in India
If the “shop” was a fake that took your money and vanished, it is cyber fraud: report it on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in as fast as you can, because quick reports give the banks a chance to hold the money.
If it is a real business that sent the wrong item or will not refund you, it is a consumer complaint. The National Consumer Helpline takes complaints on 1915 (8 am to 8 pm), on WhatsApp at 8800001915, and online. If that does not settle it, you can file a case with the consumer commission on e-Jagriti, the portal that took over from e-Daakhil in January 2025.
If it already happened
- Report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in straight away, with the UPI ID, transaction reference, amount and time.
- Call your bank on the number in its app and tell it the payment was a fraud.
- Screenshot the Instagram page, the chats, the QR code and any courier receipt before the seller deletes or blocks you.
- Report the account to Instagram from its profile menu so others are warned.
- If it is a real business refusing a refund, register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
- Call 1930The national cyber fraud helpline. Call within hours if money left your account.
- cybercrime.gov.inFile a complaint online and keep the acknowledgement number.
- Chakshu on Sanchar SaathiReport a fraud call, SMS or WhatsApp number.
