How the task scam works
The Ministry of Home Affairs describes four steps. The targets are mostly retired employees, women and unemployed young people looking for part-time work.
- An ad or message offers work from home, often with phrases like “ghar baithe job”.
- An agent on WhatsApp or Telegram gives you simple tasks: like a video, subscribe to a channel, rate a place on a map.
- You get a small commission, then are told to invest money to get bigger tasks and higher returns.
- Once you deposit a larger sum, your balance is frozen and the money is gone.
What the messages look like
Why the first payment proves nothing
The early ₹100 or ₹200 is there to win your trust. It costs the scammers little and makes the next request feel safe.
The ministry's advice is to look at the name your UPI app shows before you pay, and at where your commission came from. If the receiver is a random person, it may be a mule account, a bank account rented or borrowed to move stolen money.
Sending money to unknown accounts can also get your own bank account blocked during a police investigation, the ministry warns.
Signs of a task scam
- Pay for likes, reviews, ratings or follows
- A Telegram group with a “receptionist” or “mentor”
- Prepaid or “merchant” tasks that need your money
- A balance you can see but cannot withdraw
- Tax, fees or a penalty to release your earnings
Signs of real part-time work
- You can find the company and the role on its website
- There is an interview and a written contract
- You are paid for work, never asked to deposit
- Pay goes into your bank account on a schedule
- No one rushes you or threatens penalties
How common the task scam is
In January 2024, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) said work-from-home scams were the fraud reported most often, ahead of illegal loan apps. In December 2023, the government blocked more than 100 websites linked to task-based and investment fraud, which it said were run from abroad using ads, chat apps and rented bank accounts.
The amounts add up fast. In August 2026, a man in Margao, Goa, reported losing ₹1.42 lakh after a caller offered him paid work rating hotels and restaurants. Many task groups later move victims into fake trading, which is covered in stock market WhatsApp group scams.
